On June 11, 1963 George Wallace, the Governor of Alabama, in a symbolic attempt to block the integration of the University of Alabama, by two black students, stood toe-to-toe, when confronted by the Deputy U.S. Attorney General and pledged to keep his inaugural promise of "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, and segregation forever." The incident brought George Wallace into the national spotlight.  President Richard Nixon is quoted to have said," The whole problem is really the blacks.
